Why Are There Waste Restrictions?

If you have a large amount of rubbish, hiring a skip is a great way to help you dispose of your rubbish. We want to dispose of your rubbish in a responsible manner and take items to the appropriate facilities. However, there are some items we simply cannot accept as they can be hazardous to yourself and others. This is the simplified version of the list, for a full list please look at our terms of business.

Our Restrictions List

It is always best to check with the supplier if you are in doubt as everyone has different guidelines. This is a general list of commonly prohibited items. If you don’t follow restrictions you may have legal action taken against you.

POPs – Upholstered Furniture

New regulations were introduced in the UK at the beginning of 2023. These changed the way we can dispose of upholstered furniture such as sofas, armchairs, and footstools. They can contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which don’t break down properly in the environment and can cause serious harm to animals and humans. To be disposed of properly they have to be stored, processed, and destroyed at an appropriate facility. If you have any items that fit into this category please contact us to find out more about POP charges.

Electrical appliances

Electrical Appliances and Equipment

Anything that needs a plug, charger, or batteries will all be included in this category. These items shouldn’t be put into your skip as they have the potential to be dangerous. Take your electrical items to an electrical recycling point near you, find your local one here.

Skip With a Mattress

Mattresses

Yes, we can dispose of your mattresses responsibly, however, there is an extra cost of £45 – £50 + VAT per mattress. If you need us to do this please let us know in advance before you put them in.

Plasterboard Waste

Plasterboard

Again, plasterboard has the potential to produce very dangerous gases. It does this when mixed with water or biodegradable waste. We do allow up to 2 bags of plasterboard on top of your skip. If you need to dispose of a large amount please give us a call so we can arrange a plasterboard-only skip. If plasterboard is found in a general waste skip you can be hit with a sorting fee of around 50% of the hire price of the skip.

pile of used batteries

Batteries

Batteries can contain lead and other harmful materials which means they can be harmful if leaking. For that reason, they shouldn’t be put into a skip and should be taken to a battery bin where they can be cleaned properly.

Old asbestos requiring disposal

Asbestos

Asbestos needs to be handled very carefully, if broken it can produce very dangerous chemicals that can cause serious harm to others. If you find any you should contact a specialist to remove the material properly, this means they can remove it with the appropriate equipment.

Stack of old gas cylinders for recycling

Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders are very rarely completely empty, for this reason, they can be very harmful if they were to combust. As a result of this, they shouldn’t be placed into one of our skips. Take them to a specialist or contact the manufacturer to ask them how to appropriately dispose of them.

Medical waste, used syringes and medicine bottles

Medical Waste

Items such as needles, bodily fluids and parts can all be included in the category of medical waste. These items cannot be put in a skip as they pose a serious risk to other that come into contact with them, especially contamination, any medical waste should be taken to an appropriate facility for disposal.

Glass Waste

Glass

It shouldn’t need explaining that glass is very sharp, especially when it is smashed. For this reason, we don’t allow large amounts in our skip. We want to keep others safe, our employees sort through your waste after collection and we would like to avoid glass shards from injuring them. We can provide glass-only skips if this is something that would interest you, contact us.

pile of used tyres for disposal

Tyres & Other Items

Rubber items such as tyres can be disposed of in a skip with an extra charge added on. Any other items that you are not sure about, check your local council’s waste guides to see what they accept. Another option is to contact us so we can help you out with any items you are unsure of.

Used paint tins, fuels and solvents.

Paint, Solvents, and Fuels

We would like to think that our customers would know these are combustible items and therefore are high risk in a skip. For this reason, they cannot be accepted in your skip, these items could cause serious harm to others. If you have any of these items please take them to a specialist centre to dispose of them.
